San Rafael

The San Rafael Mine, situated in the Puno Region of southeastern Peru, stands as the country’s largest tin-producing operation and ranks among the top tin producers globally. Located at an elevation of approximately 4,500 meters in the Andes Mountains, the mine has been in operation since 1977 under the management of Minsur S.A., a Peruvian mining company. San Rafael contributes about 12% of the world’s tin supply, solidifying its position as a critical player in the global tin market. ​

The mine is renowned for its high-grade cassiterite (tin oxide) deposits and has been a focal point for technological advancements in mining. In recent years, Minsur implemented TOMRA’s XRT sensor-based ore sorting technology to enhance productivity and extend the mine’s operational life.
