Lake Waco Wetlands
The Lake Waco Wetlands weren’t always what they are today. In 2000, the Waco City Council decided to increase the size of Lake Waco by raising it 7 feet! This created an additional 20,000 acres of water in the lake. This process has become an important scientific and ecological venture for the city. Since the city raised the lake, it has built a new Research and Education Center. There are trails available for nature lovers to get up close and personal with this unique interactive ecosystem. In the spring, the staff of Cameron Park gives guided night tours of the wetlands for a fully immersive experience.
Chalk Ridge Falls Park
If you’re looking for an area that’s good for pets and kids, Chalk Ridge Falls Park is just right for you. This is not the boring plateau stereotype that you may expect to see in Texas, but it’s not so hard that you can’t bring the family along. This exceptional park has all you need in a hike: fresh spring water, nice hilly trails, and what else? A waterfall, of course! This is a park you won’t want to miss, but you may need to get a nearby hotel and set out early because parking is limited at this gorgeous retreat.
